No to Mutton, Yes to Melton.

The village's hugely popular and most prolific dad, "Dec" the Ram, has thankfully dodged the butcher, by heading to rural Leicestershire instead.

After fathering countless lambs to the Barton's flock of sheep, Dec's days looked to be limited, as the risk of inbreeding rose. Whilst the local butcher was sharpening his knives, Dec's owners - Tom and Jane - negotiated tirelessly with their shearer, who lives towards Melton Mowbray. Dec's reputation as a top breeder would surely help him avoid the mint sauce!

On something reminiscent of a transfer deadline day deal, it was agreed that Dec would 'go east' to Melton, whilst a new younger ram would head in the opposite direction, to here in West Leake.

We're delighted to confirm that Dec is now settling into his new home and has found Melton ewes to be most welcoming.

In his early days, Dec was renowned for bring somewhat unfriendly and would happily butt anything within sight. Dec's 'escape' in Spring 2022 was a definite highlight, including his wander around the village green and frequent mock charges at passing lycra-clad cyclists, causing them to wobble uncontrollably down Main Street.

But his softer side was soon brought out, having been treated to a daily diet of carrots and apples by the villagers whose properties back onto Dec's (and equine buddy, Jazz's) field. Amelia and Tim in particular became close friends with the wooly beast and they will miss him enormously.

Especially at Sunday lunchtime.
